Yonsei University's medical school developed a smart contact lens that can accurately measure blood sugar by measuring biometric indicators in tears in real time. This is the first study to confirm the association between sugar and blood sugar in tears.
The research team conducted a clinical trial by manufacturing a smart contact lens with a high-sensitivity sensor that measures sugar and an antenna for wireless communication. The antenna built into the lens serves to transmit the corresponding numerical value to the portable device. They expect that smart contact lenses can accurately measure sugar, cholesterol, and intraocular pressure that can be identified by tears, so that they can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of other diseases.
