Dana-Farber Cancer Institute investigators have developed an online, easy-to-use tool that more accurately predicts when a precursor blood condition called smoldering multiple myeloma is likely to turn into active cancer than existing predictive models.
It identifies patients who are at a high risk of developing multiple myeloma and would benefit from treatment and enables doctors to spare those at low risk of progression from unnecessary treatment.
This new tool, called PANGEA-SMM, adds new lab results to the assessment and dynamically tracks how the results change over time.
The biomarkers leveraged by PANGEA-SMM are routine measures that are already used widely in standard smoldering multiple myeloma follow-up, making the tool accessible to patients around the world.
The free, online PANGEA-SMM calculator can be used immediately to monitor patients during routine follow-ups.
