Google published a study in Nature detailing its development of a research system that measures heart rate and resting heart rate using a smartphone's front-facing camera.
The "Passive Heart Rate Monitoring During Smartphone Use in Everyday Life (PHRM)" system uses a smartphone's front-facing camera to capture video of the user's face in the seconds after they unlock their phone.
The system uses deep learning to estimate the user's heart rate, achieving a mean percentage error of <10% compared to a direct ECG recording.
The tech giant said the system works on all skin tones.
