Slide-free pathology imaging system unveiled in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and one of its incubated startups have introduced what could be the world's first AI-enabled slide-free pathology imaging system.

The system called Glanzir, developed with PhoMedics, reportedly produces direct images of fresh tissues without freezing, sectioning and staining them.

According to the university, it completes the histological imaging in "approximately three minutes" in an operating room setting for intraoperative assessment.

Glanzir operates based on autofluorescence imaging. It processes fluorophores illuminated by light through a deep learning-based virtual staining algorithm to generate images comparable to H&E (hematoxylin and eosin) staining.

With one-click scanning, this compact system can finish imaging "ten times faster than frozen section" while achieving a 85% diagnostic concordance comparable to FFPE imaging.
