During the HIMSS26 APAC session, "Scaling Clinical Synergy: The 'Intelligentization' of Taipei Veterans General Hospital," Dr Wui-Chiang Lee, vice president of Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), shared how the hospital had moved from digitalisation to a phase in which algorithms run in the background, serving as an invisible teammate.
Dr Lee repeatedly emphasised that any AI programme should start with identifying a clinical pain point. "Whenever we introduce an AI model, I need to consider the impact of this AI on thousands of doctors and nurses and how it will influence millions of our patients."
About seven in 10 of TVGH's AI programmes are developed in-house by its clinical and IT staff, while the rest are developed with third-party providers.
Across these projects, TVGH measures not only an AI's accuracy but also its effect on workflow burden, while keeping professional judgment within the loop.
The hospital has also introduced training courses to support staff's continuous AI education.
