Pancreatic Cancer Could Be Detected Much Earlier with Mayo Clinic AI

A Mayo Clinic team has built an AI system that finds signs of the most common form of pancreatic cancer much earlier than standard diagnostic methods.

The REDMOD (Radiomics-based Early Detection MODel) system identified “stage 0” signs of the cancer an average of 475 days before diagnosis and was nearly twice as sensitive as experienced radiologists.

The team said the system could dramatically improve treatment for this, one of the deadliest forms of cancer.

REDMOD uses radiomics to analyze extremely fine pancreatic tissue patterns, which are not readily visible by conventional computed tomography (CT) scans.

The AI also automatically identifies and outlines the pancreas, separating it from nearby organs and tissues.
