Virtual patients replace cases on paper and standardized patients, assist with bedside teaching and teaching in the clinic and emergency room, giving students experience with "patient" contact earlier on. Students repeatedly practice in a safe environment where they are allowed to make mistakes until they become familiar with procedures. It's hoped that the system records the entire process of drills will help students improve their thinking ability when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.
