2022 WPSD Webinar: Using Technology to Prevent Mistakes in Surgery

2022 WPSD Webinar: Using Technology to Prevent Mistakes in Surgery

Location:Live stream

About this event

Surgical care has been one of the fundamental and important components in global health care and a treatment method to help reduce disability and the risk of death in common diseases. Unsafe surgical care, however, can cause substantial harm. Examples include a team’s failure to enforce time-out that leads to a wrong surgical site or administration of a wrong anesthesia dose as well as the resultant post-operative side effects, among others.

According to the World Health Organization, up to 25% of patients experience complications after inpatient operations; at least half of surgical injuries can be prevented. In industrialized countries, nearly half of the adverse events in hospitalized patients care related to surgical care. Therefore, it is important to prevent against unsafe surgeries through risk control and monitoring such as pre-operative identification and prevention as well as emergency response.

For the sake of preventing against surgical errors, the Joint Commission introduced the three key steps: conducting a pre-procedure verification process, marking the procedure site, and performing a time-out in the right patient and the right body part. In response, measures such as marking and identification of patients and surgical sites, surgical safety inspection, blood transfusion safety strategy, and anesthesia integrated care, among others, are introduced in Taiwan for enhanced surgical safety.

This webinar is organized by the Joint Commission of Taiwan (JCT) and the Health Smart Taiwan (HST), where Professor Fu-Chan Wei, a world’s prestigious reconstructive microsurgeon honored with the Innovative Research Award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2022 and hospitals where holistic surgical care is available throughout Taiwan were invited to share their strategies and practices in the prevention against surgical errors. You are welcome to join us!
