Telehealth and primary care providers deliver effective diabetes treatment

Updated

A study by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Massachusetts General Hospital found that diabetes patients receiving care from primary care providers (PCPs) trained in advanced insulin management via telehealth achieved similar positive outcomes as those treated in person by specialists.

Results showed that 97% of all study participants achieved healthy blood sugar levels (<183 mg/dL), and 64% achieved even better targets (AG <154 mg/dL). These results suggest that the system can be initiated effectively by primary care providers and via TH, potentially expanding access to this technology to a broad population, including individuals who cannot easily access subspecialty diabetes care.

Training through telehealth or primary care delivered similar results as in-person training by specialists, highlighting the potential for broader access to advanced diabetes care.

The study's findings, which focused on Type 1 diabetes, are a major step forward in expanding access to cutting-edge care for people with diabetes, especially for those living in rural or remote areas.
