Artificial intelligence tools in supporting healthcare professionals for tailored patient care

Updated

The study analyzed a vast dataset of patient messages from individuals with diabetes, focusing on clinical inquiries and the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in enhancing patient care.

Over the course of the research, 11,151,561 unique message threads were identified, with a significant portion (66.9%) being clinical questions. Notably, 7.1% of these messages were directed to Endocrinology divisions, highlighting the importance of specialized care in diabetes management.

The research identified 12 key topics related to diabetes management, such as blood glucose control and patient-reported hypoglycemia concerns.

Clinicians evaluated the usefulness of AI tools, giving them an average rating of 4.30 out of 5. The most highly regarded tools included those providing evidence-based answers, real-time updates on medications, and automated patient education resources.

However, some tools were perceived as risky, particularly those that involved synthesizing patient data and interpreting real-time glucose levels.

The findings suggest that AI tools could significantly enhance patient education and streamline administrative processes, thereby addressing specific patient needs in diabetes management.
