India’s leading medical research institution is leveraging drone technology to deliver medical supplies quickly to remote zones as the country sets to position itself.
Dr. Sumit Aaggarwal, a scientist and lead program officer, said drones were used in 2020 and 2021 to deliver vaccines and medicine to the most remote areas of northeast India, including Manipur and Nagaland.
Showing promising results, the pilot project was scaled up to transport other items, such as blood packs; ICMR carried out a study to evaluate using drones to transport critical ophthalmic biomaterials, including human corneas and amniotic membrane grafts.
