NZ to deploy AI scribes to 1,000 emergency clinicians

Updated

The Ministry of Health embraces AI to maximise the health workforce. Its plan to roll out AI scribes to 1,000 doctors and frontline staff in emergency departments nationwide following the success of earlier trials. This tool will help free them up to spend more time with patients – listening, diagnosing, and treating – rather than writing down or typing up notes. We need to embrace AI as a way to maximise our health workforce, giving clinicians tools that save time, reduce pressure, and allow them to spend more time with patients.

The AI scribes tools have been tailored to New Zealand’s clinical language and systems, meet all privacy requirements, and include strong security protections to keep patient information safe. Many patients may already be familiar with them, as these are already used in some primary care settings.
