Opinion: Beyond bots: The human-AI pair transforming e-health in Malaysia

HEALTHCARE in Malaysia facilities are working to serve patients efficiently. Enter artificial intelligence, or AI specifically, hybrid chatbots that combine smart algorithms with a human touch. Hybrid chatbots can converse naturally, understand patient queries, and provide advice that is tailored to an individual’s medical history. In radiology, for example, AI models like GPT and BERT help doctors interpret scans with speed and accuracy. At Sunway Medical Centre, AI chatbots help to manage patient flow, schedule appointments, and assist with preliminary assessments. 

The healthcare leaders should focus on four priorities: invest in strong AI infrastructure, train staff effectively, build patient trust through transparency and ethics, and adopt standardised ways to measure chatbot performance. Long-term research should explore outcomes like chronic disease management, mental health support, and cost savings. By addressing these areas, hybrid chatbots can become a reliable partner in healthcare helping doctors, supporting patients.
