AI Helps Tailor Better Therapy for Bowel Cancer

An artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed by researchers in the U.K. helped them to reanalyze the results of a trial of irinotecan for treatment of bowel cancer that initially failed.

As reported in eBioMedicine, the AI tool showed that patients enrolled in the ARISTOTLE trial who had high tumor cell density had a much better response to treatment with irinotecan and capecitabine‑radiotherapy than those with low density.

With AI stratification, patients with high tumor cell density experienced a roughly 43% reduction in the risk of cancer recurrence and about a 50% reduction in risk of death over five years when treated with the combination therapy rather than standard capecitabine‑radiotherapy alone.

The findings suggest that rather than giving intensified treatment to every patient, tumor biology may help identify the patients who are most likely to benefit.
