AI is already delivering measurable benefits in healthcare, from earlier disease detection to improved clinical decision support, but those gains depend far less on the technology itself than on how it is implemented.
This is one of the central healthcare conclusions in the Preliminary Report of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, released by a United Nations-backed scientific panel.
The report found that successful healthcare deployments consistently combine AI with existing clinical workflows, local language support, trained healthcare workers and adequate infrastructure.
Throughout the report, the panel repeatedly argued that healthcare AI performs best when it is designed and evaluated for local healthcare environments, rather than simply imported from elsewhere.
Effective AI programs, the report said, must be grounded in local contexts from design through deployment and evaluation – highlighting deployments in Rwanda and Kenya, where language localization and integration into existing clinical workflows contributed to positive results.
