Metro South Health said it has been implementing an AI scribe on Microsoft Azure across the health service since June, with the rollout expected to take more than a year.
The rollout follows a trial in 2025 that assessed its feasibility for reducing documentation burden while maintaining patient safety and the accuracy of clinical records.
A cohort of 70 clinicians across emergency, medicine, surgical and mental health participated in the trial, which included pre- and post- implementation measurements, time-in-motion studies, surveys and in-depth qualitative interviews with clinicians and patients.
According to Canaris, the trial found that the AI scribe saved doctors an average of 59 minutes a day, with 92% of users reporting that they spent less time on administrative tasks.
More than seven in 10 patients reported that their clinicians spent more time with them and were more engaged during consultations.
Among participating clinicians, 22% said the AI scribe improved their wellbeing at work, while 56% rated its documentation as equal to or better than their own.
