Web pathway expands cardiac rehab options for rural women

Updated

A women-focused web-based programme could improve access to cardiac rehabilitation in rural and remote South Australia, with a new study finding users were more likely than non-users to initiate rehabilitation.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Especially for Women, or CREW, is an additional cardiac rehabilitation option that women can use either standalone or alongside existing in-person or telephone-based services.

It was developed by the Country Heart Attack Prevention project led by Flinders University.

The web-based programme contains four main modules covering programme orientation, self-reported health assessments, guideline-based cardiac rehabilitation education and women-specific cardiovascular rehabilitation content.

Content is further divided into streams covering acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, arrhythmia and cardiothoracic surgery, while optional modules address smoking and alcohol use.

Users can self-enrol in the programme and work through its multimedia content at their own pace on smartphones, tablets or computers, with no specialised equipment needed.

It also includes short quizzes and digital progress records that track module completion.
