Iceland's Ministry of Health released a new Digital Health Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice and an accompanying Digital Health Action Plan on Artificial Intelligence on 24 September 2026, establishing a framework for the co-ordinated and responsible introduction of AI across the country's healthcare system.
The Roadmap provides practical guidance for clinical personnel, system owners, and project managers considering AI solutions, while the Action Plan sets out governance, monitoring, and capacity building measures for implementation.
The Roadmap establishes an approach covering AI applications ranging from administrative support and speech recognition to medical imaging, risk prediction, clinical decision support, and generative AI.
Its principles require important decisions affecting patients' health and lives to remain the responsibility of healthcare professionals, while institutions should ensure transparency, appropriate handling of sensitive data, and human capacity to review, override, or reject AI outputs.
It also identifies risks including algorithmic bias, opaque models, automation bias, model drift, and deteriorating performance, stressing that AI systems require continued monitoring after deployment rather than a one-off assessment.
