From promise to patient impact: New European initiative aims to accelerate AI in cardiovascular care

Updated

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers major opportunities to improve health care, however, current use is fragmented.

To facilitate the uptake of AI in cardiovascular care, the European Cardiovascular Health Data and AI Network (CHAIN) has been launched, co-funded by the EU4Health Programme, with €20 million in EU funding and coordinated by the European Society of Cardiology.

This 36-month project aims to build a federated ecosystem for the safe, effective and scalable adoption of AI to improve the prevention, early detection and treatment of cardiovascular and related non-communicable diseases.

A repository of validated AI solutions with ‘AI passports’ will be created, helping healthcare authorities and professionals to know which models to trust.

To test the new framework, six real-world use cases will be assessed across different healthcare settings in 13 countries, covering risk stratification, early disease detection, clinical decision support and the management of complex diseases.
