The World Health Organization (WHO) and South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare have jointly issued their first declaration on AI in healthcare, setting out shared principles for responsible AI adoption, equitable access and international cooperation.
Unveiled by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and South Korean Health Minister Jeong Eun Kyeong at the World Bio Summit in Seoul on 21 October, the Seoul Declaration on AI in Healthcare calls for greater investment in AI research and infrastructure, risk-based oversight, stronger cybersecurity and international collaboration.
The declaration also recognises differences in countries' readiness to adopt healthcare AI and calls for safeguards to protect patient safety and human dignity while addressing unmet healthcare needs.
The Seoul Declaration identifies four areas for collective action: technology development and investment, AI accountability and risk management, global cooperation and health security, and implementation and follow-up measures.
