UK launches world-first AI Biosecurity Lab

Updated

The UK government announced on 24 October 2026 that it would invest £100 million in a new AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), described as the world's first dedicated organisation combining frontier artificial intelligence (AI) with biosecurity.

The AIBL's initial priorities include detecting emerging biological threats earlier and accelerating the discovery, development and testing of vaccines, treatments and other countermeasures.

The announcement positions biosecurity not simply as a public-health concern, but as an emerging dimension of AI security and national resilience, highlighting the potential of AI to strengthen biological preparedness and the governance challenges of using increasingly capable AI in a sensitive, dual-use scientific domain.

The AIBL illustrates the expanding scope of AI governance, where cybersecurity, biotechnology, public health and national security increasingly intersect.
