eHealth NSW is expanding electronic access to ambulance patient records across New South Wales hospitals following a pilot that cut the time clinicians spent retrieving paramedic information from 24 minutes to less than two minutes.
The project integrates the NSW Ambulance electronic medical record (EMR) system with the Ambulance Arrivals Board, enabling ED clinicians to access paramedic records earlier and add them to hospital EMRs.
The project was piloted in February at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney before expanding to Narrandera and Young Health Services in the regional Murrumbidgee Local Health District (LHD).
Across the initial pilot sites, the median time taken to locate paramedic information fell from 24 minutes to less than two minutes, while the proportion of records available at the first clinical assessment rose from 32% to 63%.
Electronic records now support 92%-95% of ambulance presentations in Murrumbidgee and about 84% at Prince of Wales Hospital, largely replacing paper-based handovers, according to eHealth NSW.
